The celebration and origins of mother's day

On 07/03/2023 0

The celebration of Mother's Day has a long and varied history, with different cultures and civilizations having their own versions of the holiday.

The modern Mother's Day, however, originated in the United States in the early 20th century.

The origins of Mother's Day can be traced back to ancient civilizations such as Greece and Rome, where festivals were held to honor the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. In the Christian tradition, Mothering Sunday was a day when people would return to their "mother church" and honor their mothers.

The modern Mother's Day, as celebrated in the United States, was first proposed by Anna Jarvis in 1908, in honor of her mother who had passed away. Jarvis wanted to create a day to honor all mothers and their sacrifices for their children. She began a campaign to establish Mother's Day as a national holiday, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

Mother's Day quickly became popular in the United States and spread to other countries around the world. Today, Mother's Day is celebrated in many different ways and on different dates in various countries, but the sentiment of honoring and appreciating mothers remains the same.
