Mel00267During his service in the war, McCrae was moved by the sight of the countless graves of soldiers who had died in battle, and in May 1915, he wrote "In Flanders Fields," a poem that has since become a symbol of remembrance for fallen soldiers. The poem was first published in December 1915 in the British magazine Punch, and it quickly became popular throughout the Allied countries.

Sadly, John McCrae did not live to see the end of the war. He died of pneumonia and meningitis on January 28, 1918, while still serving in France. McCrae's legacy lives on through his writing, and his poem "In Flanders Fields" is still recited today as a reminder of the sacrifice made by soldiers in times of war.
